I wrote a dead simple bash script that starts up Firefox, Safari and Chromium and samples cumulative cpu time every 5 seconds. All browsers are set up without any extension to open “www.google.it”.
OS: Mac OSX Snow Leopard
Hardware: Macbook Pro 13″

Do you see where this is going ? The same thing happens on every website, when it comes to idling and being gentle on cpu Safari always wins. The difference becomes N times bigger if you consider keeping N tabs opened. This is why I’m a Safari user (next time someone asks, ctrl-c/ctrl-v).

Sono fortunato cliente Bancoposta, cosa di cui mi vergogno.. Mi è arrivata a casa una lettera che mi intimava di passare all’ufficio postare a ritirare lo Smart Card Reader Bancoposta. Incuriosito dall’oggetto sono andato subito a prenderlo.
Sembra una calcolatrice, stesso colore blu del preziosissimo euro convertitore che ci aveva regalato Berly, 2 belle batterie usa e getta, e una fessura per inserire la smartcard.
Tutti i possessori di un conto Bancoposta hanno una smartcard (che non è una carta di credito, per avere una carta di credito bisogna fare un’altra carta.. ) ed un codice segreto. Quando si vuole fare una SINGOLA operazione online bisogna:
- Aprire il sito bancoposta
- Fare login con nome utente e password
- Selezionare l’operazione desiderata e descriverla dettagliatamente
- Prendere il lettore smart card
- Infilare la scheda smart card
- Selezionare dal menu la voce “firma digitale”
- Il sito banco posta da un codice da inserire lettore, univoco per l’operazione
- Digitare il codice nel lettore
- Digitare il pin della smartcard
- Il lettore smartcard restituisce la firma digitale (un altro codice)
- Ricopiare quest’ultimo sul browser
A questo punto si può andare avanti con l’operazione.
Sul foglio c’è scritto che è comodissimo, praticissimo.
Io che ste cose le ho studiate non sono riuscito a trovare in letteratura una alternativa più complicata e scomoda di questa. Grazie Poste Italiane.

Description :
Streambook is a Mac OSX Facebook desktop application built using PyOBJC, Cocoa, pyfacebook running in the background and notifying the user about facebook home stream updates with both audio and visual notifications. Pyfacebook has been slightly modified to add support for the new beta stream Facebook API.

Use case :
Facebook users know that continuously checking for facebook updates really steals too much time. To avoid this I use AdiumX to log in the Facebook Chat and Streambook for stream updates. This way I only open the website when I see there’s some interesting update or I want to publish one.
I will add features to Streambook only in order to get better notifications but I will NOT add publishing features. There are other similar applications like “Facebook for adobe AIR” and “Seesmic desktop” with more features. Those are HEAVY applications using a lot of cpu time and no very suitable to sit in the background.

- Notification for EVERY update to the home stream. Note that a post is considered updated when is created, modified, commented, liked, .. (see upcoming features)
- Enable/Disable sound
- Uses almost 0% cpu 
Upcoming features :
- Option to make notification sticky
- Choose to be notified about new OR updated posts
- Notification for new “inbox” messages
